Over the years we have seen that most costly problems start with small mistakes made when the domain is bought. Here are the ten most common ones, their consequences and how to avoid them.<\/p>\n

1. Registering the domain in someone else\u2019s name<\/h3>\n

Registering the domain in the name of an employee, web designer or former agency is the most common and most expensive mistake. The legal owner is the registrant; recovering the domain after a dispute can take months.<\/p>\n

Solution:<\/strong> Make sure your company name is the registrant, and keep the account credentials with a permanent person in the company.<\/p>\n

2. Missing the renewal date<\/h3>\n

Reminder e-mails often go to an address nobody reads any more. Expired .tr domains are suspended for 2 months, then wait 1 month in the re-allocation list before becoming available to everyone; for generic extensions the redemption period costs extra.<\/p>\n

Solution:<\/strong> Register for several years, keep the contact e-mail up to date and add a renewal reminder to your calendar.<\/p>\n

3. Looking only at the first-year price<\/h3>\n

Many registrars sell the first year for 1\u20133 USD; renewals can then cost 15\u201323 USD per year.<\/p>\n

4. Not checking who issues the invoice<\/h3>\n

Some registrars invoice through companies registered in Northern Cyprus or abroad. Such invoices are outside T\u00fcrkiye\u2019s official e-invoice system and need extra accounting work.<\/p>\n

Solution:<\/strong> If you buy for a Turkish company, ask which company issues the invoice and whether it is an e-invoice.<\/p>\n

5. Settling for a single extension<\/h3>\n

Owning only .com or only .com.tr leaves the other extension open to competitors or domain speculators.<\/p>\n

6. Not checking trademark rights<\/h3>\n

8. Using free e-mail instead of business e-mail<\/h3>\n
