What Are Adhesive Velcro Dots?

Hook and loop tape is also known as velcro tape, touch fastener or, in Turkish, “cırt cırt” and “para para” (because the round dots look like coins). One part carries many small plastic hooks, the other soft loops. Pressed together the hooks catch the loops; a light pull opens them again. On adhesive-backed models each part has a self-adhesive back, so no sewing, screws or staples are needed. Dots are shipped as hook-and-loop pairs.

How to Apply Adhesive Velcro Dots

  1. Prepare the surface: The surface must be clean, dry, dust-free and free of grease.
  2. Keep the pair together: Leave the hook and loop parts closed together so they line up exactly on both surfaces.
  3. Stick the first side: Peel the liner of one side, place it and press firmly for a few seconds.
  4. Stick the second side: Peel the other liner, close the flap and press to stick it to the second surface.
  5. Let it set: Wait a while before the first opening so the adhesive can bond fully.

Who Invented Hook and Loop?

Hook and loop was invented by Swiss electrical engineer George de Mestral. In 1941, after a hunting walk in the Alps with his dog, he examined the burdock burrs stuck to his clothes and the dog’s fur under a microscope and saw hundreds of tiny hooks caught in loops. He turned the idea into a product over many years and patented it in 1955. The name “Velcro” combines the French words velours (velvet) and crochet (hook).
