Country Code Domain Extensions (ccTLD) List

In short: A country code top-level domain (ccTLD) is the two-letter country code at the end of a web address: .tr for Turkey, .de for Germany, .it for Italy, .jp for Japan. The codes largely follow the ISO 3166-1 country codes, and the global list is maintained by IANA. You can search and filter all country extensions in the table below.

The last part of a web address is called the top-level domain (TLD). In www.aso.com.tr, “.tr” is the country code top-level domain for Turkey, and “.com.tr” is the commercial second-level space under .tr.

What is a domain extension and how many are there?

Domain extensions are recorded by IANA, which manages the DNS root zone. As of October 2026 the IANA database lists 1,437 top-level domains with an assigned operator. The main types are:

  • Country code TLDs (ccTLD): .tr, .de, .it, .uk and others. 309 in total; 248 in Latin script, the rest in local scripts such as .рф (Russia).
  • Generic TLDs (gTLD): .com, .net, .org, .info and the new extensions launched through the 2012 new gTLD programme, such as .shop, .online and .app. Open to everyone.
  • Sponsored / restricted TLDs: .edu, .gov, .mil, .int, .aero, .museum and others; only eligible organisations can register.
  • Infrastructure TLD: .arpa, used for the technical infrastructure of the Internet; not open for registration.

How are country codes assigned?

Almost all country extensions are the two-letter codes of the ISO 3166-1 standard. That is why some codes come from the country’s own name: Germany .de (Deutschland), Spain .es (España), Switzerland .ch (Confoederatio Helvetica), Croatia .hr (Hrvatska), South Africa .za. A few exceptions:

  • The UK’s ISO code is GB, but the extension in use is .uk; .gb is reserved.
  • .eu belongs to the European Union, not a country.
  • .su (former Soviet Union) and .ac (Ascension Island) are specially reserved codes.
  • Codes can be retired when countries change: Yugoslavia’s .yu was removed, and East Timor moved from .tp to .tl.

Turkey’s extension: .tr domains

Turkey’s country code extension is .tr. .tr domains are allocated through TRABİS (.tr Network Information System) via accredited registrars.

  • No documents: since 14 September 2022, com.tr, net.tr and org.tr are allocated without documents on a first-come, first-served basis. web.tr, gen.tr, tel.tr, name.tr, biz.tr, tv.tr, info.tr and bbs.tr also need no documents.
  • Documents required: av.tr, bel.tr, dr.tr, edu.tr, gov.tr, k12.tr, kep.tr, pol.tr and tsk.tr.
  • Direct .tr (example.tr): applications for “a.tr” names opened on a first-come, first-served basis in September 2024.
  • Authority: with Law No. 7590, in force since 31 July 2026, the duties and powers for domain allocation were transferred to Turkey’s Cybersecurity Directorate (Siber Güvenlik Başkanlığı).

How does Google treat country extensions?

According to Google’s documentation on multi-regional sites, country code domains are a strong signal to users and search engines that a site is intended for a specific country.

However, Google treats some country codes as generic because they are widely used without a country focus: .ad, .ai, .as, .bz, .cc, .cd, .co, .dj, .fm, .io, .la, .me, .ms, .nu, .sc, .sr, .su, .tv, .tk and .ws. The regional .eu and .asia are treated as generic too. Google notes that this list may change.

What do the generic extensions mean?

  • .com (commercial), .net (network), .org (organisation), .info (information), .biz (business): open to everyone.
  • .edu: accredited post-secondary institutions in the US. Turkish universities use edu.tr.
  • .gov: US government bodies (gov.tr in Turkey). .mil: US Department of Defense.
  • .int: organisations established by international treaty (e.g. NATO, WHO).
  • .aero aviation, .coop cooperatives, .museum museums, .travel travel industry and .jobs human resources are sponsored extensions.
  • .name is for personal names, .pro for professionals.

Which extension should you choose?

  • If your customers are in Turkey: .com.tr or .tr – no documents needed, registered in minutes.
  • If you work internationally: .com, ideally together with .com.tr to protect your brand.
  • If you sell in a specific country: that country’s extension (e.g. .de for Germany). Some countries require a local address or representative.
