iPhone “Cannot Verify Server Identity” Mail Error: How to Fix
In short: The iPhone “Cannot Verify Server Identity” error appears when the mail server’s SSL certificate does not match the server name you entered (e.g. mail.yourdomain.com) or has expired. The secure fix is to use the server name the certificate is issued for – for ASO Web mail: smaug.aso.com.tr, IMAP 993 SSL, SMTP 465 SSL, full e-mail address as username. Turning SSL off also removes the warning but sends your password unencrypted.
Fix with SSL on (recommended)
- iOS 18: Settings → Apps → Mail → Mail Accounts (iOS 14–17: Settings → Mail → Accounts) and tap your account.
- Tap your address, then change Incoming Mail Server host name to smaug.aso.com.tr.
- Under Advanced, keep Use SSL on with port 993 (IMAP).
- Go to SMTP, tap the primary server, set host name smaug.aso.com.tr, Use SSL on, port 465.
Quick fix: turn SSL off
Under Advanced and SMTP, switch Use SSL off and use port 143 (IMAP) / 110 (POP) and 587 (SMTP). This works but is less secure.
