What is hook-and-loop tape? Hook-and-loop tape (often called Velcro) consists of two strips that lock together when pressed and can be opened and closed thousands of times. One side has small plastic hooks, the other soft loops. Self-adhesive versions stick to boxes, catalogues, panels and objects in seconds; sew-on versions replace buttons and zips in textiles.
How does it work?
Hundreds of tiny hooks catch in the loop fabric. Pulling the strips apart releases them, so the tape can be reused thousands of times. Swiss engineer George de Mestral developed the idea in 1941 after burdock burrs stuck to his clothes and patented it in 1955. “Velcro” – from French velours and crochet – is a brand name.

How to apply self-adhesive tape
- Clean and dry the surface.
- Keep hook and loop pieces joined, peel off the liners and place them.
- Press firmly for a few seconds.
- If possible, avoid loading or opening it for a while so the adhesive can fully bond.
